Lively Lady
Hayling Yacht Co are delighted to have been working with The Around and Around charity who are refitting Lively Lady ahead of the 50 years celebration in 2018.
Sir Alec Rose’s iconic 36 foot yacht circumnavigated the world. July 16th 1967 was the chosen start date. Five months later they arrived in Melbourne. Sir Alec set about readying the boat for the remainder of the trip and January 14th 1968 was set as the return date.
On July 4th 1968 Sir Alec Rose and Lively Lady sailed back into Portsmouth to a hero’s welcome. Thousands had crowded onto the beach at Southsea to catch a glimpse of them. From Southsea it was on to a civic reception at the Guildhall and then home. Crowds lined the streets along the way as all of Portsmouth came out to welcome Sir Alec home.
More recently between 2004 and 2008 Alan Priddy and a team of supporters of Lively Lady carried out an extensive refit so she could sail around the world again but this time with an ever changing crew of disadvantaged youngsters from the Portsmouth area. Setting sail from Portsmouth on July 28th 2006 with a crew of two adults and two youngsters Lively Lady made her way across the Atlantic for her first stop in St Johns Newfoundland. At each stop the youngster would change and Lively Lady would set off towards her net destination. Over the two year voyage Lively Lady followed a course between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator and went the “Fat Way” Around the World with very little repairs except the mast track needing repairing in Jamaica after a particularly tough passage from Wilmington.
Hayling Yacht Company have been a long time supporter of Alan Priddy’s Around and Around Lively Lady project and Lively Lady has been refitted at Hayling Yacht Company by a team of volunteers. We have helped with advice and support and it good to see this historic vessel back in the water in the condition that she deserves to be in.
