Coppercoat Treament
Coppercoat™ is possibly the most powerful and long lasting anti-fouling available to the modern yachtsman. This hard wearing densely copper filled epoxy resin is successfully protecting tens of thousands of boats the world over, saving their owners the time and expense of annual re-antifouling. Many users have now enjoyed more than 15 years continual protection from a single treatment!.
Coppercoat™ is the combination of a specially developed solvent-free epoxy resin and high purity (99%) copper. Each litre of resin is impregnated with 2 kilos of ultra fine spherical copper powder, the maximum allowed by law, making Coppercoat™ the strongest copper based anti-fouling available. Indeed no other anti-fouling exposes as much active copper to unwanted marine life. The combination of high copper content and a unique blend of biocides ensures ultra low growth rates and a clean hull.
Motorboat owners report increased speed at lower revs, meaning a lower rate of fuel consumption and less engine wear. These benefits are not simply derived from hull cleanliness, it comes from lower drag.
Conventional anti-foul paints absorb water (allowing them to leach their biocides) and in so doing swell and increase in weight. This adds friction and drag and slows the boat which explains why dry-sailing (i.e. sailing without anti-foul) is a faster option. Coppercoat™, on the other hand, is epoxy based and does not absorb water. It does not swell, does not increase in weight, and does not add drag to the boat. Coppercoat™ provides the ideal solution – the high-performance associated with dry sailing and the protection of anti-fouling.
On immersion sea water attacks the exposed pure copper powder, causing the formation of cuprous oxide. This highly effective antifouling agent deters growth until the surface degrades further to become cupric hydrochloride. This final copper form is highly unstable, and is washed away by the movement of the yacht, thereby removing any accumulating silt or slime. This automatically reveals a fresh copper rich surface, whereby the process recommences.
With an average thickness of at least 200 microns of Coppercoat™ being applied in a treatment, and a typical corrosion rate of 5 microns per year, it is easy to appreciate how this coating offers such long lasting and effective protection.
Furthermore, the inherent waterproofing qualities of the epoxy ensure that a treatment of Coppercoat™ will help prevent osmosis in GRP craft and offer extra protection against corrosion in steel vessels.
Teak Decking Repairs
Our experienced team of professional craftsmen are able to provide a complete teak decking service, from regular maintenance tips to repairs and if necessary complete replacement.
Like many things regular simple ongoing maintenance is a large part of keeping your teak deck in good condition.
We suggest that you avoid scrubbing your deck wherever possible as this can over time erode the surface of the softer grain and encourage more problems to start. Simple cleaning with a sponge, some detergent and a soft brush will keep your deck in good condition.
If your teak deck has missing plugs, loose planks or is cracked and worn with missing caulk our skilled craftsman can help rejuvenate your old deck, replace the caulk, fit missing or loose plugs and provide you with a sealed finish that you will be proud of. Once the seams start leaking it is important that remedial work is carried out as soon as possible to avoid the necessity to replace the entire deck.
If it is necessary to replace the entire deck, we can work with you to establish the tight solution for your needs and for your budget. We can source the finest affordable teak and materials.
Replacement teak deck works include:
- We would start by building a decking plan to ensure that your new deck will fit correctly. Our craftsmen can template and lay your decking to any size or style of craft.
- Stripping off the original deck.
- Check that the underlying deck is in good condition with no sign of dampness or water ingress and repair as necessary.
- Remove existing fittings as necessary.
- Fill old screw holes and smooth surface as necessary. Preparation is the key to ensuring we achieve a great finished product.
- Laying of new Teak Deck and caulking as necessary, re-instate removed fittings.
- Final finishes.
Replacement decks can be laid using either real teak (if available) or a synthetic alternative. There is a large cost difference, and we are happy to discuss your options and solutions.
Anti-Fouling
Antifouling is the most common painting job that needs to be carried out by boat owners. It is vital to protect your boat using antifouling paint, as once fouling has a hold on your hull it will rapidly colonise the surface, making it difficult to remove.
Applying an antifouling paint will prevent the attachment of fouling organisms, such as barnacles, weeds and slime, to the hull of your boat – a fouled hull can cause serious problems, therefore prevention is much better than cure.
As soon as your boat has been slipped it is cleaned with a pressure washer to remove any weed and slime before it is allowed to dry. If fouling has been allowed to build up on the boat it will need to be removed by scraping to make sure that the new anti-fouling starts from a sound platform.
At Hayling Yacht our team of experienced craftsmen have many years experience in applying anti-fouling. We use only the best quality anti-fouling paints to ensure that your boat remains free of fouling for as long as possible.
